Critical Careers - Women Building Careers in Digital Infrastructure - Book - Page 35
What would you tell a young
woman about this industry to
encourage her to join it? What do
you want her to know, hear, or feel
before making that decision?
I would say, 昀椀rst of all, don’t let anyone else de昀椀ne what
you’re capable of. Whether people say good things or bad
things, you have to believe in yourself. Your starting point
does not de昀椀ne your potential. Where you start is just the
beginning and it doesn’t decide how far you can go.
If you’re thinking about this industry, don’t be afraid to
try something new. It might feel technical or intimidating
at 昀椀rst, but don’t let that stop you. Push yourself into the
unknown a little bit. Curiosity, persistence and courage
will take you further than you imagine. Even if you don’t
understand everything at the start, that’s okay. No one
does. You learn every single day in this environment, and
that’s one of the best parts of it.
So I’d tell a young woman to chase what interests her, be
proud of what she wants to do, and not hold herself back
because something feels different or challenging. If you
give it a chance, you might 昀椀nd you really love it — just
like I did.
