Critical Careers
SENIOR LEADER
Looking back, what were the de昀椀ning
decisions or moments that shaped your
career path?
I’ve been in procurement for around 25 years. Early on, I spent much of
my time in hospitality, primarily across facilities management, equipment
and asset management. That gave me a strong foundation, even if it
wasn’t a particularly intentional path at the time.
The real turning point came when I was made redundant, which was
about 12 years ago. I had never been in that position before, and it
forced me to stop and think more carefully about what I actually wanted
next, rather than simply moving into another role by default.
That’s when I made a very conscious decision that I would choose roles
based on the person I’d be working for, rather than the industry or
the title. It was a bit of a shift in mindset. I took what was essentially a
sideways move at the time, but I knew I’d enjoy working with the person,
and that felt more important than anything else.

That decision ultimately led me into data centres. A recruiter I had known
for years introduced me to a hiring manager, and although I knew nothing
about the industry, the conversation itself stood out. I remember walking
around a park in London on the phone for over an hour, and coming away
from it with a strong sense that I wanted to work with him. That moment,
and that decision, completely changed the direction of my career.
