Kao Data is committed to reducing the waste footprint of our
business through sustainable procurement, aligned with our
ISO14001 certi昀椀cation. Currently we recycle 100% of our waste via
our facilities management partner CBRE and have increased recycling
by 10.4% YoY at our Harlow campus. Beyond this we actively consider
circular economy opportunities related to IT equipment refresh cycles
via our OCP partnership, and via supply chain engagement.
Driver
In future, there may also be opportunities to consider heat
reuse community partnerships as part of new build data centres,
harnessing the nascent Heat Network Zones (Energy Act 2023), to
support local authority decarbonisation plans. Though feasibility is
currently constrained, we have already begun mapping heat reuse
opportunities which we will discuss in future reports.

Biodiversity and habitats
As part of our commitment to environmental
sustainability, we develop all our facilities
on brown昀椀eld sites. As part of the BREEAM
assessment process we address biodiversity
considerations in every development, helping
us regenerate habitats and create new ones as
we design and build our facilities. We currently
have 0.1 hectares of protected habitat, with
wild gardens at our Slough and Harlow sites
and plan to add more when our Harlow
campus is complete next year. We are also
currently in the process of re-commissioning
a living wall at our Slough site. Furthermore,
Kao Data supports numerous local
biodiversity projects via our Kao SEED Fund,
including rewilding initiatives and supporting
community gardens.

Community led action to enhance
biodiversity and climate resilience is a crucial
part of our commitment to being community
partners. Bees are a crucial ally in our 昀椀ght
against climate change and biodiversity
loss, which is why we are long term partners
with the British Bee Charity, sponsoring 10
beehives, which support around 800,000 bees.
