An interview with
Gary Kilmister
Compliance Director at Kao Data
Governance
Gary you are head of compliance, but you are also
Vice-Chair of the highly in昀氀uential ESG+ Group at
techUK. Can you tell me about what this is?
Sure, the Data Centres ESG+ Group is an industry leading
initiative that focuses on ESG and sustainability-related
issues and trends that are relevant to data centre providers
and organisations in their supply chains. It aims to promote
collaboration among companies while also aiding them in
comprehending sustainability-related policy, regulation,
industry trends, opportunities, and challenges.
How does the role feed into your role at Kao Data?
The meetings and communications within the Data
Centres ESG+ Group are regular, providing Kao Data
with a consistent platform for meaningful dialogue and
collaboration. Additionally, the group hosts educational
events focusing on its priority topics. This helps me stay at
the forefront of compliance and enables me to highlight
broader sustainability issues to Kao Data management. In
2025-26 this has included focusing on issues such as water
use, heat reuse, Scope 3 emissions reporting, and climate
resiliency and adaptation more generally.
Why is the ESG+ Group so important?
Sitting on the ESG working group and representing Kao
Data as member (alternate) on the Data Centre Council is
a great privilege. Working with my peers within this group
and through techUK has provided us with a great voice
and respect within the Government agencies, as we are all
striving to make a difference.
