To ensure a more thorough understanding of Kao Data’s
asset exposure to physical climate risks, our investors
Infratil recently enlisted the support of ‘Morrison & Co.’
Harnessing a software platform developed by Jupiter
Intelligence (‘Jupiter’), Infratil was able to assess its portfolio
(which includes Kao Data), and map its asset level climate
risk exposure. Jupiter was selected for its global capability,
credibility, and market-leading resolution.

Jupiter 昀椀ndings
The Jupiter analysis assessed the number of Kao
Data’s asset locations exposed to eight perils and
their exposure levels in 2020, 2050 and 2100.
The most common physical climate risk exposures
for Kao Data are to water stress and wind in the
2050 to 2100 period. Kao Data’s exposure to water
stress stays consistent over time with 3 sites in the
“Highest” exposure band (annual human water
demand/supply >0.8) across the 2020, 2050 and
2100 timeframe. Modelling suggests that exposure
to water stress is not a climate-change-related risk;
however, 75% of Kao Data’s sites are in the ‘Highest’
exposure band. Exposure to cold decreases over
time, with four sites in the ‘Medium’ exposure band
in 2020 (15-60 days), one site in 2050, and zero in
2100. This is re昀氀ected in an uplift in the number of
sites in the ‘Low’ exposure category in 2050, which
then increases to four sites in 2100. All other perils
are in the ‘Low’ or ‘Lowest’ exposure band across
the timeline.
Next steps
Now that we have a better understanding of our physical
risk exposure, Kao Data plans to further assess those
sites deemed as being vulnerable to climate peril(s) and
determine potential 昀椀nancial or operational impact. Where
the impacts are material, we will identify steps to advance
resilience of these assets and their operations against
identi昀椀ed current and anticipated exposures. We will
continue to work with relevant stakeholders to coordinate
our response to all climate related risks identi昀椀ed.
